Printing brushes are largely used for moistening industrial printing plates — a process called dampening. The brushes meter out a thin coat of water onto the printing plates to support ink transfer onto the intended substrate. Printing brushes are used most often in high-speed, off-set-web printing, though they can be used in other printing methods as well.

Common ways that printing brushes function in industrial print production include:

• Moving paper
• Holding paper in place
• Anti-static brushes
• Printing plate processing and developing
• Blanket washing
• Offset printing
• Lithography
