The Brush Filaments are the most important part of the strip brush and Precision Brush stocks over 400 different options. Your brush application is what dictates the filament choice and our engineers will be glad to assist you with this selection process.
The first thing we like to know is whether the application is for a newly designed brush or if you are currently using a brush. If you are using a brush, would you like to duplicate the exact brush or would you like to modify the filaments or dimensions.
Many times customers are not sure what filament size or type of brush filling they are using, so it can be helpful to get a sample of the brush or at least some filaments as well as pictures of the application. It is also helpful to know if the application is wet or dry, hot or cold, and if the brush will come in contact with chemicals.
I will briefly explain some of the main differences between the most popular filaments. Nylon comes in three types 6, 6.6 and 6.12. They all have similar bend recoveries and wear ability in dry applications, but 6.6 will not absorb as much moisture as type 6 and type 6.12 will not absorb as much moisture as type 6.6 nylon. When wet, the less moisture absorbed the stiffer the filament. Nylon has good bend recovery and usually regains its original straightness when soaked in hot water.
Polypropylene is a better selection if the brush will come in contact with petroleum products or other certain chemicals. It will also keep its stiffness whether wet or dry because it will not absorb any moisture. Polypropylene is also less expensive than Nylon, but it does not have as good wearability or bend recovery characteristics.
We have many wire options available including Stainless Steel, Brass, Phosphor Bronze and carbon wires. There is a big price difference between some of these and usually the brushing application will dictate which would be the best choice. Caustic chemical, static reduction, burr removal, etc.
We also have a wide selection of natural filaments and animal hair such as Horse hair or Goat hair that are well suited for application requiring very soft filament, excellent bend recovery or the ability to retain water. If you are currently using a brush and do not know what the filament is please send us a sample and we can most likely determine the size and material.
