Brush fillings can be Level or Crimped, whether they are synthetic or wire. Level filaments are straight, while crimped filaments have a wave to them, defined by the number of waves per inch and the depth of the wave, known as amplitude.
The purpose of crimped filaments is to spread the filaments away from each other, making the brush bushier. This is important in many applications, especially in cylinder brushes where the brush face needs to appear as a single surface and not a spiral wound.
Level fillings keep the filaments closer together and are better suited for applications such as providing a weather seal or machine guard.
